How are health insurance premiums calculated in Switzerland?

Premiums for compulsory health insurance (KVG/LAMal) are determined by the health insurance companies and approved annually by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH).

Place of residence

Switzerland is divided into three premium regions by canton (urban, intermediate and rural regions). Premiums are higher in urban areas, where healthcare costs are higher, and lower in rural areas.

Age of insured

Insurers classify policyholders into three age groups. Policyholders aged 0 to 18 pay the lowest premiums, young adults aged 19 to 25 pay intermediate premiums, while adults pay higher premiums.

Insurance models

The standard insurance model allows you to consult any doctor directly, which means higher premiums.

Cheaper alternative models exist, such as HMO (Health Maintenance Organization)You must consult an affiliated medical center. There is also the Family doctor where you must first consult your family doctor.

Finally, the model that is often the least expensive is Telmed. You must call a medical advice line before visiting a doctor.

Annual deductible

The deductible is the amount you pay yourself before the insurance begins to reimburse your expenses. The higher the deductible is highthe lower the premiums. Annual deductibles for adults range from CHF 300 to CHF 2,500, while children's deductibles range from CHF 0 to CHF 600.
